Recently came across some old films from when photography meant guesswork and a minolta dynax 404si inherited from my sister. It's incredible how much i've learnt since then and it makes me smile to see all the mistakes but obvious love for what i was doing. Makes me feel positive about all the new and daunting things i'm trying to learn now...

I WAS RUN OVER BY AN AMBULANCE

Yes, indeed, i was ironically run over by an ambulance outside my university hospital, all witnessed by the police. Funnily enough i didn't blackout as most people do but remember very clearly thinking as i rolled over the bonnet of the van, smashed into the pavement, and watched as my foot was run over by the wheel, "oh crap I'm being run over" my inner monologue simply stating the facts as if my body wasn't already aware. Anyone who knows me will probably assume that it was only a matter of time -having blindly walked out into the road without looking only to be saved by a friend more times then i can remember- but a logistical review of the accident and a quick scan of the CCTV reveals that for once in my life, i was the innocent pedestrian! This fact didn't effect me too much until i woke up from surgery on my arm after a botched up general anesthetic job, and really really wished with all my heart that while lying in the middle of the road being half rolled and half lifted onto a stretcher by paramedics i could have found something more creative to say to the apologetic ambulance driver than; 'No I'm sorry, it's all my fault, i must not have been looking.'

Anyway, a broken ankle with separated ligament, severe bruising, some grade 1 and 2 injuries, a fractured elbow repaired with 4 metal pins held together with tension wire, and three weeks later, i have become a little obsessed with charting my recovery, and the miracle that is our bodies. so mostly for myself, but also to share with anyone into some gruesome images/videos, here is my body on the road to recovery. (my only regret is not charting the massive swelling or brusing which went a variety of magnificent colours)

Day 2, wednesday 23rd June, all cast up, and unable to get anywhere without a wheelchair

My beautiful neice keeps me company before surgery, entertaining all the staff with her sickbowl hat...

Day 3, day after surgery with a completely numb arm after the emergency anesthetist had to put a block on it (after the first anesthetist didn't numb me properly and i woke up feeling like i'd just had my arm cut open and had four pins hammered into my arm and secured with tension wire). The emergency anesthetist not only saved me then, but the day after the surgery he came down personally to make sure the nurses were not being stingy with the morphine, the result of this was discovering a variety of videos like the one above of my staring glassy eyed at the camera of which i have absolutely no recollection.

Day 4. the physio therapist came today and fitted me with an aircast boot, gave me a crutch and taught me how to walk, as i never took any pictures, here's one of Jessie J rocking the same footwear.

Early hours of day 5 the nurse comes to change my bandages, and reveals to me my zipper arm...

A couple of days after my release from hospital, i have my first dressing change at the doctors which reveals in it's full glory my very green zipper arm. i wish i'd taken a picture of my foot at this point cos the injury was a fantastic mess of pus and swelling and truely phenomenal bruising.

Just over a week since i've been home and i'm beggining to wonder how i'm going to fill the 8-12 weeks resting in bed, since the photography summer is now delayed til next year, after reading the alchemist which puts a pretty positive philosophy on things, i start to draw aztec flowers, and read a lot of sunday papers.

And begin to decorate my sisters, until the little one starts taking the piss, and comes to me every morning to ask me to touch up her tattoos and repaint her nails. 'the salon is now closed, it's 6 in the morning, Ashani, go back to bed!'

It's week 2 now and the nurse is impressed with the progress of the healing of my injury on my broken ankle all the skin and nerves are beginning to grow back, the injury in this pic is a quarter of the size it was before, in only 2 weeks! (i wish i'd taken a photo before!)

Week 2 and my technicoloured bruises on the base of my foot and leg are almost faded, strangly i'm beginning to miss the bruises, they were entertaining in their own special way.

Managed to make it out to my dad's long planned charity night (arranged to raise money for HALOW a great charity that works with young adults with learning disabilities) thanks to the help of 2 of my favourite people, my boyfriend Anthony and great friend Candice...

Appointment at the Fracture clinic today to have my stapels out, looks pretty nasty and jaggedy, but i think it will make a great scar, if i ever get stuck for conversation, i can just pull out the elbow.

Week three, and the improvement in the elbow is incredible, i can't believe how quickly it's fading. unfortunately they're gonna have to cut me open again in 8 weeks to take out the wire, but it's reassuring to know how quickly the skin recovers. For the moment things are looking pretty great, can finally shower again after 3 weeks of the longest sponge baths in my life, wash my own hair, can now raise my arm above my shoulder and can almost straighten it (albeit painfully for now). Also i'm getting pretty nifty on my crutches, and getting used to having to stay still for long periods of time. Still in quite a lot of pain at night, (as the surgeon casually informed me "oh yea that's because we had to cut into your muscle" -nice-) but my doctor's hooking me up with some Tramadol (i knew all these years of non-smoking -and therefore classified as a non-addictive personality eligible to continue on the strongest pain medication- would pay off some day) so life is pretty ok -and slightly fuzzy- right now...

Hopefully i'll be posting up some artistic creations again soon....

During my most recent trip to mexico in the southern state of Chiapas, i was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to visit a community in the mountains controlled by the zapatista rebels. The Zapatistas are fighting for the ideals of mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata; "Tierra y Libertad" (land and liberty) agrarian reform, equality for all, and for the rights of the suppressed indigenous communities. After being driven out of the towns and cities by the military after an uprising in 1994, the zapatistas have been living in a state of rebellion in autonomous communities ever since. Living in the sentiments of Zapata; 'It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees'
